01 | Personality
The revolutionary head of the Oda clan who tried to unite Japan, Nobunaga is famous as one who tried to completely change the nature of her country. Destroying all conventions that inconvenienced her and acting with a mentality that would only come to be common place a few hundred years later, she was one who made many enemies and many allies through her radical decisions. She favored merit over social standing, innovation over tradition, and turned all conventional Japanese notions at her time on their head.
Of course, she was a ruthless leader, caring not for the methods so long as the end result she desires is achieved. To many she appeared a tyrant who demanded what she wanted when she wanted it, and this was somewhat true. She was tyrannical in many regards, as her merit-based mentality meant that results were the means to judge a soldier's worth. The flip side of it was how lax she is with those under her. Because she only cares about the results, when she gives orders they tend to be "Accomplish this" or "do that", without detailing how to go about it. This let her men accomplish their goals in the way that they could do it, which often lead to greater results.
She has a very short temper which is quite easy to set off, but those who know her know it is also a short-lived temper. If something angers her, she will explode at it, and then not long after return to normal levels. This also extends to her patience, and if something is taking too long for someone to do she will take over doing it for them to show them how it is done. This is mostly in regards to those "below" Nobunaga, which basically means nobody of acknowledged superior or equal standing. She treats those equal or greater than her with respect and simmers it down, but those below her receive the full brunt of her anger and sarcasm.
As expected of one who's mentality is so radically different from her time, Nobunaga is an eccentric figure. Though she acknowledges herself as an atheist, she enjoys hearing the religious and philosophical ideas of others simply to hear the way others think and believe. It is fitting, as one who believed Japan should be a center of cultural exchange. She in particular had an odd fascination with various things from foreign countries and made a habit of collecting them, such as clocks and red wine. As the inventor of "tea cup diplomacy", Nobunaga was an advocate of resolving things through words, and instead of money or land would reward those serving her with tea sets and accessories. To receive such a thing from Nobunaga is a sign of great respect, even if it doesn't seem like it, and she often does so without regard to whether or not the other party even wants it.
Nobunaga is also fond of dance, having a favorite dance in the Atsumori dance. However, due to maintaining her self-respect, performing it would be akin to setting a death flag for her, so even when sitting down for a drink she will never perform it. Incidentally, she is quite the ham and enjoys claiming the lime light, and will introduce herself to others as the "True Overlord". Part of this is the influence of one of her skills, though another part is ego.
She also has a favorite phrase: "It is inevitable!". This phrase is often modified based on circumstance and the situation, such as "It's inevitable, you know!" "Isn't it inevitable?" and "It's inevitable, is it?". | 02 |
